Roemer measured the speed of light by timing eclipses of Jupiter's moon Io. In this figure, S is the Sun, E1 is the Earth Ole Rømer, a Danish astronomer, calculated the speed of light by observing the eclipses of Jupiter's moon during the years 1668–1674. A discrepancy was observed for the time between the eclipses, increasing when the Earth was moving away from Jupiter and decreasing when the Earth was approaching. Ole Christensen Rømer was a Danish astronomer who, in 1676, made the first quantitative measurements of the speed of light. Rømer also invented the modern thermometer showing the temperature between two fixed points, namely the points at which water respectively boils and freezes.

For example, if we record the Io eclipse interval, i1, when Earth is at location L and the Io eclipse interval, i2, when Earth is at location K, the speed of light will be the distance between L and K divided by (i2-i1). Using this method, Roemer was able to measure the speed of light as 220,000,000 m/s. From these findings, Romer could estimate the speed of light. He stated it to be 220,000 km/s, which is not that different than the modern value of 299,792 km/s. Romer Fiber specializes in large scale project management and installation of high speed data networks. Fiber optic cabling capabilities include underground fiber drops, trenching, aerial fiber lashing and cable placement in Urban and Rural environments. Light is propagated from luminous Bodies in time and spends about seven or eight minutes of an hour in passing from the Sun to the Earth.

Romer speed of light

In fact, at the time of Rømer’s successful prediction, there was ongoing debate over whether light had a measurable speed at all, or was somehow transmitted instantaneously. I was talking about, the fact that, as measured and calculated by Roemer, the speed of light is determinable from the duration between moon-eclipse beginnings when the Earth is moving toward Jupiter, and when the Earth is moving away from Jupiter. Io. If the speed of light is finite, it will take light a certain time T to travel the distance d, and our measurement of the orbital period of Io will be off by the amount t. It will be shorter by t when Earth is moving towards Jupiter, and longer by t when Earth is moving away from Jupiter. 2015-04-20 · Ole Roemer, a Danish astronomer in the 17th century, stumbled upon the speed of light during timing observations of the emergence of Jupiter’s closest Galilean moon, Io, from behind the planet’s limb. The point wasn't really to measure the speed of light; Ole Romer is remembered because his was the first experimental evidence that light has a speed at all (contrary to the previous assumption that sight is instantaneous). It was amazement that drew me to focus on his achievement.

○ Galileo still believed that the speed of light would someday be measured, just not using his method. Ole Rømer. Nov 9, 2020 He suggested this difference might be due to a difference in light travel times. Romer measured a value of ~220,000,000 meters per second  Sep 10, 2018 on the light travel-time effect, or Rømer delay, as measured from the offset of unequal masses, the finite speed of light causes the mid-times.

Using this method, Roemer was able to measure the speed of light as 220,000,000 m/s. How did Ole Christensen Rømer, who in 1676, shortly after Galileo's death, was said to have measured the speed of light as 220,000 km/s by timing the orbits of Io around Jupiter? My only guess is the moon Io orbiting Jupiter is simply a clock. Rømer's argumentation was the reason Descartes' view of instantaneous light propagation was abandoned in favor of the until now accepted view of light traveling at a high but finite speed.

2020-02-20 In 1676, Rømer determined that the speed of light must be finite. His experiment consisted on observing the eclipses of Io, one of Jupiter's moons, by Jupiter itself. He timed these eclipses over a period of half a year, starting when the earth was closest up to when the earth was farthest from Jupiter.
